The Fire Swim has a dedicated Committee that ensures that each year the event runs as smoothly as possible.
The following sponsors help towards this, providing valuable support, for which the committee are grateful.
Travis Perkins are keen to support both National and Local Charities and this year have avidly supported the Fire Swim. As well as funding the pool hire, they had a team swimming in the event helping to raise sponsorship. In addition, throughout the event they gave out prizes which were redeemable from local businesses, thus not only supporting the Fire Swim, but the local community and swimmers alike.
Colchester Leisure World are kind enough to hand over their pool to the Fire Swim each year, which enables the event to take place locally. Many of the Life Guards give up their time to provide the protection that is needed for all participants, and in addition always put in a team to swim in the early hours of the morning raising sponsorship money as well as giving up their time!
In the midnight hours, after a long day of registering swimmers, counting lengths swum, giving out medals, bolstering enthusiasm and providing support to the event, the helpers are usually in need of a little sustenance! MacDonalds come to the rescue donating meals for those who tirelessly (well almost - it’s hard not to be tired at 4 in the morning!) help to make the event run so smoothly.
Hospital Radio are stalwarts of this event. Every year their team spend the full 24 hours playing music to keep the atmosphere lively. They also give updates throughout each hour on the number of lengths swum - you’d be surprised at the competitiveness that springs up between the swimmers - and amount of money being raised. They also broadcast the last hour live to the patients of Colchester General Hospital and Essex County Hospital, bringing the added excitement of the closing minutes to the wards.
Smith & Watts Printers provide invaluable assistance to the Fire Swim. Each year they unfailingly print the sponsorship forms and other literature that is so vital to the event.
A new fundraising venture in 2007 was for photographs of each team of swimmers to be available. Photos were taken of each team prior to swimming and dhgraphics donated the frames into which these were inserted.
