The Colchester Fire Swim is an annual fundraising event that has been taking place since October 1981.
Each year, on the first weekend in October, Colchester Leisure World’s swimming pool is taken over for 24 hours and teams of people swim with the aim of having fun and raising sponsorship money at the same time!
The money raised is then divided equally between The Fire Fighters Charity (formerly the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund) and local Charities/Groups and deserving causes.
To date over £491,000 has been raised.
All ages and abilities are welcome to swim and ideally a team of six swimmers and a lane marker will be needed. Don’t worry if you can’t get six swimmers, if you want to swim and can last an hour, then you can still join in! Of course, the fewer swimmers in your team the more lengths you’ll have to do, but with the supporters cheering you on and Hospital Radio belting out the music, the time will fly by!
If you’re interested, then contact Alison Bruce at Colchester Fire Station and she’ll send out the sponsorship forms and full information to you. Have a quick look at the ‘Taking Part’ page as well as this will give you an idea of what times are free for this years event.
As an added incentive - as if having fun and raising money for good causes isn’t enough - there are trophies for the most lengths swum and the most money raised. There are also other trophies given out, for example, The Trevor Porter Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Fire Swim and a new Trophy from 2008 specially for the Scouting fraternity, The Kim Collier Trophy. .
So go on, if you have an organisation, work colleagues, or just some friends and family who would be interested, then get in touch and get those swimming togs to the ready!!
